About Indonesia

A booming city on Java!

Semarang is a lively port city on Java, Indonesia, and an important economic hub of Central Java. The project works mainly in the neighborhoods of North Semarang, where organized sports for kids are still limited. Kids there get PE at school, but for most of them structured, quality sports after school are simply out of reach.

As a coach you help kids get active and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. By coaching the sport they love most, you improve their physical health, build their confidence and teach them life skills.

Our programs are supported by sports students from the university of Semarang. That makes it easier for you to connect with the kids, helps the students practice their English, and leaves you with friends your own age in the city. Semarang itself, with its rich history, cultural sights and friendly community, is a great place to learn, contribute and have an unforgettable experience at the same time.

The project

Daya Krida Indonesia: the power of sports, in Bahasa

We founded the project ourselves. Together with local organizations and schools you help the kids of Semarang stay active, healthy and confident.

Soccer is as popular here as in Europe, badminton is a national pride with players who dominate internationally, pencak silat is the traditional martial art, and sepak takraw, volleyball played with the feet, is loved everywhere. That mix of sports mirrors the country’s rich culture.

Practices run five days a week at local schools and on our sports fields. The schools draw kids from the whole area but offer little sports or PE, so your structured drills and games are hugely appreciated. You quickly become a familiar face in the neighborhood.

Each day you coach about three hours, mostly kids and teens between 6 and 13. That leaves time for Indonesian lessons, exploring the city, and on weekends our cultural trips: journeys off the beaten path that always give back to local communities.

Sports you can coach

Seven sports, you choose where you stand

Pick one sport or combine two. Every sport below has a local coach you work alongside.

Soccer coach

Where: Neighborhoods and schools

Indonesia has a thriving soccer culture with passionate players and fans. In the soccer project you coach kids and teens in the neighborhoods and at schools, giving them a fun, structured place to play and grow.

Many kids have natural talent; what is missing is understanding of rules, tactics and strategy. That is your part.

What you will do

Run after-school practices and lead sessions together with local coaches and other volunteers, teaching tactical insight and skills to the next generation of players.

Boxing and self-defense coach

Founded by: Oscar Hauser, former internWhere: Neighborhoods and schools

Boxing and self-defense make young people stronger, but above all teach confidence, discipline and respect. The project was started by one of our former interns and now runs in neighborhoods across the city and at schools.

Many kids bring natural strength and grit; the sessions add technique, discipline and self-control.

What you will do

Teach the basics of boxing and self-defense: technique, stance, control, respect and mental resilience, plus safe and responsible self-defense, alongside local coaches.

Swim instructor

Where: Schools and local communities

Water is everywhere in Indonesia, so swimming is a safety skill first. Many kids have little or no experience in the water, and your lessons directly improve their safety and independence.

What you will do

Teach floating, breathing, stroke technique and water safety step by step, with local coaches and other volunteers, with attention to technique, confidence and fun.

Volleyball coach

Where: Schools and after-school practicePopular with: Girls especially

Volleyball is growing steadily in Indonesia, especially among girls. Local clubs organize practices and tournaments, and youth programs introduce the sport at school. The goal of the project is to make the sport attractive and accessible: kids who show interest join our free after-school practices and can move on to established clubs.

What you will do

Promote volleyball at schools, run after-school practices and help kids make the step to a club, so a sport often seen as too expensive becomes available to everyone.

Badminton coach

Where: Neighborhoods and schools

Badminton is one of the most beloved sports in Indonesia, with a long history of international success. You coach kids and teens in various neighborhoods and schools, where badminton gives them new skills, pride and a positive environment.

What you will do

Give after-school practices and run drills with local coaches, improve game insight, technique and tactics, and coach the rules and strategy of the game.

Rugby coach

Where: Schools and development programs in Semarang

Rugby is new in Indonesia and slowly gaining ground, mostly in Jakarta. In Semarang it is a completely new sport for most kids, which makes the project about introducing the rules, tactics and culture of the game as much as about skills.

What you will do

Run after-school rugby sessions with schools and development organizations, teach the basics and team spirit, and lay a foundation for the sport in the city. Maybe you coach the first Indonesian international.

Your own sport

Ages: 6 to 13When: Five days a week, about three hours a day

Many volunteers have introduced their own sport at our projects. It is fun and has big impact, because kids get a wider range of sports. We help you set it up, and Stichting The Power of Sports, the foundation that works alongside us, can support it financially.

What you will do

Lead practices for young players at local schools or on our fields, bring structure and fun, and let the sport grow with the support of other volunteers and our local team.

Questions we get about Indonesia

How experienced do I need to be?

No certificates or sports degree required. You support local coaches and are never on your own. Basic knowledge of the rules of your sport and lots of enthusiasm are what matter. You do not need to speak Indonesian; everyone speaks the language of sports.

Can I only coach soccer, rugby, badminton and volleyball?

No, you can coach almost any sport. The project is still young and we are expanding our programs, so introducing a new sport is a great way to leave your mark.

What are the Indonesian lessons like?

Lessons take place at our location during the day, between the morning and afternoon sessions, and include cultural classes about Indonesian daily life. They are taught by our university-trained staff and consist of six lessons of 1 to 1.5 hours. Extra lessons can be arranged.

Can I eat vegetarian?

Yes. Tell us in advance and the team in Indonesia takes it into account.

How many other volunteers will be there?

There are always other volunteers and interns at the house, usually between 5 and 15, from several countries. Ask us how many are booked for your dates, and we add you to a group chat before you leave.

What do I need to arrange before I leave?

After the intro call you get our welcome pack and a personal dashboard that walk you through the visa, vaccinations, insurance, flights and what to pack.
